Someone (who is this someone?) sent me the last lines ascribed to doctor F. They give a few explanations about his fragmoscaphe. And about his mental state.
Fragmoscaphe
I have christened the last of my exploratory tools this way. It allows the operator a protection against the side effects of a too strong exposure to revelation. The sensitive individuals are indeed unconsciously destroyed by what they perceive.
I don't know if it is an innate mechanism, acquired through contacts with society or being the result of a conspiracy. All hypothesis can be considered at this stage. But the facts remain : many artists, scientists, mediums, clairvoyants, prophets... who are considered by their kind as bizarre, pervert or deranged, are in fact fighting this effect.
"Commonsense" often thinks that they are looking for inspiration in various destructive substances or habits. It is false.
You only have to note that, among these "addicts" (to alcohol, ether, morphine, gaming, hallucinogenics or high level competition), very few come out of the mainstream. In fact, drug is not the source. It is only useful to limit the extent and strength of their perception. And what they transcribe, at the end, is so much distorted by their various hallucinations and paranoias, that the meaning is at best obscured.
We should also undoubtedly see another aspect of this protection mechanism in "commonsense". If, by chance, the subject achieves a correct reproduction, he will be perceived as especially dangerous and will be designated as dropout. That way, the whole society works as a regulation mechanism, crushing without pity those who stray away.
I have myself experienced this aspect of the problem during my first experiments. My funds were quickly cut by those who wouldn't or couldn't understand the way my work was well-founded. Seen from the present perspective, this circumstance seems lucky. I could that way benefit from a protective confidentiality. Even if I know I'm actively hunted, I was able to remain anonymous.
Quietly settled, once my starting observation was established and checked, the system's construction was simple. It works with reduced objects, appended postulates, seemingly unconsidered trifles.
Depending on which filter is selected, perception will be different. I indeed do not claim that I offer an absolute perception but, with the fragmoscaphe, I still can perceive scraps which normally shouldn't be lethal.
Danger still remains. If the fragments I submit to the system have too many implications, if the filter is not chosen properly, the operator can be struck very strongly. This risk is wily, since apparently harmless fragments can go much further that what you would have thought first. Thus, a portion of the varnish of one of my furniture, which I had chosen for its commonplace quality, created a bewildering backlash. The security mechanism worked, and, as soon as the shields were saturated, the cutout engaged itself. But I still got burnt eyebrows. Yet the reaction speed of the fragmoscaphe was so quick that the control recorders didn't perceive it. The log files show a clear cut, a discontinuous passage from normal to neutral state.
After an enquiry, it seems that this piece is period furniture. It belonged, two centuries ago, to a medium, before a poet used it to write the best of his work. I had moreover made a mistake by letting the blueprints of my system stay on the piece of furniture. This way, the sample was already charged, the blueprints amplified the whole signal through a larsen effect, and the sensitivity of the fragmoscaphe had been set way too sharp.
But this incident allowed for a full-scale test. The system works even better than I would have hoped. Still I can't stop myself from thinking that my doubts are part of a defence mechanism, with which I must fight as everyone must. I set up an experimental protocol which permits to ensure the operator's security. You only need to proceed step by step, at a logarithmic pace. It is of course much longer, and then again I doubt my own reasoning. Was this idea instilled into me? Was I found despite my discretion? The number of people with whom I communicate, for daily needs as well as for the various supplies the fragmoscaphe demands, stays around about 10. They obviously influence me. Maybe I should risk a dangerous attempt and go back to a dichotomic exploration? What if the cutout doesn't work fast enough?

MYSTERIOUS FIRE, ONE MISSING Yesterday, Thursday 3rd, a fire destroyed the old warehouses of the von Gewitz factory. The fire broke in a room which was previously used by the night watchman, and had been rented for a little while to a Mr Heffe. ![]() The von Gewitz warehouses after the fire, photo Sophie G. The warehouses were meant to be destroyed and the owners declared they rented this room "because they had the opportunity to do so, and there was nothing left to watch over". It allowed them "to pay for the fencing cost and no more". We have to remark that the area of the old factory is very large, and that the rumor that dangerous products are still stocked here is going around (and is denied by the owners). The firemen assert that the fire originated in the room anyway, without being able to discover its cause. No remain of the lodger could be found, not even his identity. The name "Heffe" didn't lead the investigators anywhere, and seems to be a pseudonym. Did the man die in the fire? The mystery remains whole. |

MR "HEFFE" IDENTIFIED A famous scientist, professor Marchand, allowed the identification of the missing lodger after the von Gewitz warehouses fire. However, this identity doesn't lead the enquiry much further, since the mysterious Mr Heffe would in fact be the no less mysterious doctor "F". Doctor F had for a moment been the talk of the town two years ago, not because of his remarkably obscure and incomprehensible work, but because of the mystery he shrouded himself in. Professor Marchand declared he had provided doctor F with research material, and this material was identified among the charred remains. Professor Marchand couldn't explain to the investigators if doctor F's experiments might have led to the fire. The material was mainly constituted of very expensive and very accurate measurement instruments. Doctor F should have returned these instruments after he had used them, which won't be possible. Doctor F still remains missing. |
