It is a religious official, for sure. A post-catholic cardinal? If it is, he's consumed by conflicting longings and a feeling of guilt. The wish for power as opposed to the will to follow the rule. Or maybe I'm being optimistic and his scruples have long departed. If he looks thoughtful it's maybe only because he's plotting something inside a plot. Plans within plans, under the guise of meditation, in a shrine of old stones.

But then again, why choose the only place in the palace where the walls seem to be staring at you? Guilt, for sure.
